Hans Christian Andersen (April 2, 1805- August 4, 1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, the third-largest city in Denmark. Hans is a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, poems, but his best remembered for his love for writing fairy tales.

Hans created more than 200 folk and fairy tales beloved by innumerable generations of children. Some of his well-known fairytales are The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, and The Teapot. Other fairy tales like “The Wild Swans” are less known.

The Danish nobility recognised Anderson as a national treasure. When they heard Andersen was suffering from an early stage of liver cancer, they ordered the government to give Andersen a lifetime allowance. He was about 69 years old when he passed away. A museum in his hometown Odense was built.
