Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu was born as Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Uskup, Kosovo Vilayet, Ottoman Empire which is today known as Skopje, North Macedonia. She was popular across the globe as a Catholic nun and a missionary who provides “selfless caring”.

She chose the Spanish spelling of the name “Therese de Lisieux” which is the patron saint of missionaries. Her name has been used as a token, when someone says “I’m no Mother Teresa”, it generally means “I’m not as good or as generous or selfless as Mother Teresa”. Before we list the most famous Mother Teresa quotes, let’s first spend a little time to know more about t her.

She took a vow of chastity, over, and obedience as a nun. And also took a fourth vow – to give “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor”. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity” with over 4,500 nuns and present in 100+ countries. Their goal is to provide help and accommodation to people who are sick of HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis. They also provide mobile clinics, soup kitchens, and counselling programs.

She lived in her home country for 18 years before moving to Ireland, then eventually moved to India where she spent most of her life. In India, she learnt how to speak Bengali.

Mother Teresa was also criticised for her work mostly by activists in Calcutta, India. She was accused of promoting sickness and suffering. Suffering is a gift from God since Christ suffered for humans. She was also criticised for painting Calcullta a place with nothing but beggars and poverty – which according to Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, the city is more than that.

Outside India, she was also condemned for her stand on abortion. She believed that abortion is “the greatest destroyer of the peace today”. She also said, “Yet we can destroy this gift of motherhood, especially by the evil of abortion, but also thinking other things like jobs or positions are more important than loving”.

Mother Teresa received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her charitable work to overcome poverty and received a $192,000 prize.

In 1997, Mother Teresa died of heart disease which she has suffered from in 1983 after a heart attack. She had a second heart attack in 1989 and started using a pacemaker. She also suffered from pneumonia in 1991 and broke her collarbone from falling in 1996. She accepted an exorcism to be performed on her due to the suspicions that she is under attack by evil.

She retired from being the head of her charity just a few months before she passed. Although her death was overshadowed by the death of Princess Diana just a few days before.

In 2016, she was canonised by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City which is the process of declaring to be a saint. It was based on the belief that she performed miracles in curing sick people. Apart from that, her work also proved that she dedicated her life to a heroic purpose in the name of God and the Church.
