This compilation of inspiring Nelson Mandela quotes is about life, the world, equality, freedom, and more. But first, let’s learn more about him.
Mandela fought for many things for South Africans but mainly for the apartheid to end and for Black people to be treated equally in their own country. His critics from the right win deemed him to be a communist terrorist while the far left didn’t like the idea of negotiating a reconcile with apartheid supporters.
He studied law at the University of For Hare and the University of Witwatersrand. He then proceeded to work as a lawyer in Johannesburg. As a young person and even as an adult, Mandela has always been an activist fighting for the freedom of Black South Africans. Due to his outspoken support of anti-apartheid, Mandela was sought by the police. However, the law enforcement always claims that he is being hunted for the suspicion of his involvement with communism that aims for terroristic plots.
In 1962, he was captured. It was suspected that someone tipped the police of Mandela’s location. He was placed in a jail in Pretoria. Two years later, he was transferred to Robben Island where he was jailed for 18 years. In 1982, he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town, then again to Victor Verster Prison until his release in 1990.
During his imprisonment, he suffered from tuberculosis due to the state of his cell and later on stroke. During Mandela’s entire time in prison, his photos were prohibited to be published in newspapers. He was released in 1990.
The negotiation about the end of apartheid lasted for a year in 1991. In 1994, he was elected as the President of South Africa.
After his release, he published a book titled “Long Walk to Freedom”. There were also many books that were published post-humously such as “The Prison Letters of Nelson Mandela”, conversation with Myself”, and “In His Own Words” – many were published by his foundation.
