Roald Dahl was a British writer, poet, novelist, and wartime fighter pilot. He was born on September 13, 1916. He grew up in Wales, however, both his parents are from Norway. During World War II, he serves in Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot, then an intelligence officer and finally as a commander.
Before the war started, Dahl was known as a great writer for children and adults. He was known for his children books like James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, The Twits, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, and George’s Marvellous Medicine. While his book Tales of the Unexpected were for adult readers.
He was under criticism when he said “I am not anti-Sematic, I am anti-Israel”. Author Eleanor Cameron also criticised Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as racist due to presenting Oompa-Loompas as African slaves. Both issues marked Dahl as racist. His work was also called misogynistic for choosing “evil, domineering, smelly, fat, ugly women” as his favourite villain.
Dahl received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement and British Book Awards in 1983. He married the American Actress Patricia Neal in 1953 and they had five children together who became inspiration in some of his books.
